Thanks Deanna. We're back on "travel" where we've relo'd to Saskatoon so we're in paid housing and a rental car that switches every 45-90 days. If we were still in Vancouver, we wouldn't even have a car.

That said, agree completely on rear-facing. As a mechanical engineer, I see the benefit immediately. I appreciate the link.

Maggie definitely is not ready for a backless booster full-time (she's in a Britax Frontier 85 now and will be for many years to come), but for short trips like an airport shuttle to a hotel and for rental cars she has a (don't laugh) Bubble Bum: http://carseatblog.com/10427/bubble-bum-review-booster-seat-or-flotation-device/.
Not knowing what you drive, I'd just say get the convertible seat with the highest rear-facing weight/height limit you can afford. Most go to 40, some go to 45 (like the Radian), and one goes to 50lbs (the Clek Foonf, but holy expensive). Rear-facing is SO much safer; we got Maggie to almost 3 years old rear-facing. This is a good list: http://carseatblog.com/carseatblogcoms-recommended-car-seats/
